Sweet tasty sugar melons at the beginning of february? I have no clue where they come from. But with only 5 ingredients, I prepared a delicious plate. Before you can see my recipe, I show you what I saved from the bins of the supermarket at the beginning of this month.
The food I saved from the container
On the picture above you can see what I found a few days ago in the container. At the beginning of february, you do not find that much vegetables and fruits. However, there are many doughnuts and often I also find exotic fruits. This time, there was sooo much bread in the container! I could only take a small share with me.

Found in the container on the 2nd of February
Unfortunately, I cannot freeze the bread because they have already been freezed. Supermarkets never make fresh bread, they only take dough out of the freezer, thaw and bake it. When I tried to freeze them again at home, they had a strange consistency when I unfreezed them again. When I cannot eat all the bread, I dry it and make breadcrumbs or bread cubes with it. Anyway, my grandma and my family eat the greatest share of the bread and the doughnuts.
Let’s have a look at today’s recipe idea:
Sugar melon tartar with black grapes
The following recipe is a welcome change to the common starter „sugar melons and parma ham“. I found the inspiration for this recipe in Schrot&Korn, a German journal for organic food.

It looks like salmon, but sugar melon tartar is plant based 🙂

Because its taste was so great, I prepared the same dish the next day, but this time there were no black grapes left
Enjoy it as a starter, dessert or snack!
Ingredients for 4 people
- 2 sugar melons or other melons
- 1 grape cluster (ca. 20 grapes)
- 4 tbsp. of chia seeds
- 6 tbsp. of lemon juice
- 4 tsp. of honey, maple syrup or agave syrup
- if you like it hot: some chili powder
Peel the melons, take out the seeds and cut the fruit into little cubes. Wash and cut the grapes. Put some grapes aside to garnish the dish. Put the melon cubes and the cut grapes into a bowl, mix it with all the other ingredients and let the melons steep for five minutes. Now put the tartar on the table and garnish it!
What did you find in February and how did you like the sugar melon tartar? I am looking forward to our comments!
